Skill considerations

This is a nearby Ulster County cluster, not a Greene County spot. 'Esopus Creek' spans different water: the lower creek near Saugerties is tidal where it meets the Hudson, while upstream sections can be moving water. Check permits/fees at village launches, and match your launch to your skill and the tide.

Why Saugerties Belongs in Nearby Paddles

Saugerties is in Ulster County, south of the Greene County line - not a Greene County spot. We include it because it is a logical nearby paddle cluster for Catskill-area visitors: people staying around Catskill, Hunter, or Tannersville often drive toward Saugerties, and it has several launch points worth knowing. It belongs in the nearby lane, with permit and fee details kept prominent.

Launch Options Overview

Saugerties is better handled as a small cluster than a single put-in. The Village of Saugerties references multiple launch points on the lower Esopus Creek, near where it meets the Hudson. Start your planning with the main waterfront access and confirm the current rules for each:

  • Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park - the usual starting point for lower-Esopus paddling
  • Village Beach / Glasco / Malden references - additional access points referenced locally; confirm current status, allowed craft, and any fees before relying on them

Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park

Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park is the launch most often pointed to for Saugerties paddling, on the lower Esopus. Parking, restrooms, allowed craft, and any permit or nonresident fees are details to confirm with the village before you go - they are not field-verified here. If you have launched from it recently, submit an update.

Permit and Fee Notes

This is the part not to skip: some Saugerties village launches may require a permit and/or charge nonresident fees, and the allowed craft can vary by launch. Confirm the current requirements on the Village of Saugerties kayaking page before you drive out, so a permit rule does not end your trip at the parking lot.

Hudson and Esopus Conditions

"Esopus Creek" is not one paddle. The lower creek near Saugerties is tidal where it meets the Hudson - sheltered in places, but with current that reverses and boat traffic near the confluence. Sections upstream can be moving water, with current and changing levels, and call for a different skill set. Match your launch and route to your experience and the tide, and do not assume the whole creek behaves the same way. Paddle Greene does not give moving-water route instructions from a desk - get local, current guidance for those sections.

Safety note

Moving water considerations.

Creeks and rivers can change dramatically after rain. Water levels, current speed, and strainers can turn a manageable paddle into a dangerous one. Check gauge levels and recent rainfall before heading out.

What we still need to verify

These details are not yet confirmed for this guide. They are based on desk research or are awaiting a field visit, so treat them as a starting point and confirm before you rely on them.

  • Permit requirements and any nonresident fees at village launches
  • Exact allowed craft and current launch conditions
  • Parking and restrooms at Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park and other launches
  • Tide and current conditions near the Esopus/Hudson confluence
  • Which upstream sections are moving water (different skill set)
  • Coordinates - start with Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park; verify before publishing pins
