What prompted this note
Sharp-eyed readers notice that a site called Paddle Greene covers Nutten Hook, Onteora Lake, Schodack Island, and the Schoharie Reservoir - none of which are in Greene County. That is deliberate, and the reasoning deserves to be public.
What we know so far
Paddlers do not stop at county lines. If you are standing in Athens deciding where to paddle, the Columbia County shore is a few minutes across the river, and a Catskill-based visitor deciding between Esopus Creek and the lower Catskill Creek does not care which county collects the taxes. A Greene-County-first site that pretended those options did not exist would be less useful, not more local.
So the rule is coverage with labels, never blur:
- Every out-of-county guide says so in its title - "(Nearby)" - and names the actual county up front.
- Nearby pages open by saying plainly that the spot is not in Greene County, and their first FAQ answers "Is this in Greene County?" with a clear no.
- On the where-to-paddle index, nearby spots live in their own sections with a "Just outside Greene County" tag, and the map can filter them the same way.
- When a Greene County guide mentions a nearby spot, the county label rides along inline.
The test for adding a nearby spot is whether it genuinely serves someone paddling from Greene County - a cross-river option, a calmer fallback, a rental lake worth the drive. Our journal roundup of spots just beyond the county collects the current set.

Nearby guides are held to the same standard as core ones - each carries its field-review label and a verification list, and most are Desk-researched today.
