What prompted this note
Community updates keep these guides honest, and the single most useful thing an update can include is a photo. Words can argue about whether a carry is "short"; a photo of the path settles it. This note covers which shots help most, so two minutes of phone photography does the most good.
The photos that help most
The same shots we require of our own field reviews are the ones that improve a guide fastest:
- The launch itself, from land - ramp, dock, or shoreline, so readers see what getting in looks like.
- The launch looking out at the water - the immediate conditions a paddler faces.
- The parking area - capacity and how it relates to the launch.
- The route from parking to water - this is how carry distance and surface stop being guesses.
- Posted rules and signs - fees, hours, and restrictions change, and a photo of the sign is the best evidence there is.
- Entrance or signage - helps the next reader confirm they are in the right place.
- Anything that gave you pause - mud, a steep bank, debris, construction.
Dates matter as much as the shots: a photo from last weekend tells us more than a great photo from three summers ago.
How to send them
The update form composes an email, and photos ride along as attachments to that email. Tell us what each photo shows - "parking lot at 9 am Saturday" is perfect - and when you took it.
Permission and privacy basics
A few ground rules before you hit send:
- We only publish photos with your permission - the form asks for it explicitly, along with how you want the credit to read (name, initials, or anonymous).
- Get permission before photographing people recognizably, and skip shots that capture license plates when you can.
- If a spot is informal or fragile, say so. We would rather handle a sensitive access point carefully than map it for everyone - that policy is spelled out in what makes a useful launch update.
