What prompted this note
The Schoharie Reservoir looks, on a map, like the biggest flatwater near Greene County's western edge - and it is. What the map does not show is that it is New York City drinking-water land, and the access rules end trips before they start. This note is the short version of the full reservoir guide, for anyone about to load a boat and drive out.
What we know so far
As we understand the current rules - verify them with NYC DEP before you drive - launching your own boat requires all of the following, arranged ahead of time:
- A free NYC DEP Access Permit for every person, with a separate permit for each NYC reservoir you plan to boat.
- Steam-cleaning of the boat, paddles, and gear by a DEP-certified vendor before anything touches the water.
- A valid DEP boat tag, issued after cleaning and registration.
The workaround is the seasonal DEP rental program: pre-cleaned, registered kayaks and canoes at some designated launch sites, which removes the cleaning step - but every paddler still needs the personal Access Permit. It is non-motorized water only, launched from designated signed sites, in a season that runs roughly May 1 to October 31.
The reservoir sits around Gilboa and Prattsville, just over the county line (Schoharie County - just outside Greene County), which is why we list it as a nearby option rather than a local launch.
What still needs checking
The reservoir guide keeps a long verification list: the current permit and boat-tag process, this season's steam-cleaning vendors, the current designated launch sites and their parking, season dates and hours, and whether paddleboards are allowed at all. Rules like these change, which is exactly why the just-show-up plan fails.
